Collagen… is it actually doing anything?

Let’s clear this up properly because collagen is everywhere right now.
Collagen protein... Collagen water...
All promising better skin, stronger nails, healthier joints.
And look… I get why people buy it.
It sounds like you’re giving your body exactly what it needs.
But here’s what’s really going on.
Your body does NOT absorb collagen as collagen
When you drink or eat collagen, your body breaks it down into amino acids.
Same as any protein.
It doesn’t go:
“Oh great, collagen… let’s send this straight to her hair and nails.”
It goes:
“Cool, building blocks… where are we needed most?”
And that’s usually:
organs
immune system
muscle repair
Not your skin. Not your nails.
So can it still help?
Yes… but only indirectly.
If your body has everything it needs, it can use those amino acids to help build collagen where needed.
But that’s a big if.
Because building collagen in the body requires:
enough total protein
vitamin C
zinc
copper
Miss those… and nothing gets built properly.
Here’s where people go wrong
They start collagen and think:
“I’ve got my protein covered.”
Nope.
Collagen is not a complete protein.
It’s missing key amino acids your body needs to actually function properly.
So what happens?
meals get smaller
protein quality drops
nutrients drop
…and now the body has less to work with, not more.
“But mine has whey added”
Yep… and this is where it gets even trickier.
A lot of collagen products now add whey protein to make it look like a “complete” product.
But here’s the catch…
👉 It’s not always in the right ratio
You might get:
a small amount of whey
a large amount of collagen
Which means:
still not enough complete protein
still missing the balance of amino acids your body needs
So it sounds good on the label…but doesn’t always deliver what people think.
Real talk — what actually builds strong hair, skin and nails?
It’s not one powder.
It’s:
consistent protein from real food
regular meals (your body needs a steady supply)
enough calories
micronutrients from whole foods
This is where most people fall down.
Why skin hair & nails can actually get worse
I’ve seen this happen.
Someone starts collagen… and their nails get weaker.
Not because collagen is “bad”…but because:
they replaced real protein with it
they started eating less
nutrients dropped without them realising
And nails are one of the first places it shows.
So should you use collagen?
Here’s the honest answer.
👉 If your nutrition is already solid
It can be a nice extra
👉 If your nutrition isn’t dialled in
It’s just expensive dust
The bottom line
Collagen is not magic.
It’s not useless either.
It’s a support tool, not the foundation.
If you want stronger nails, better skin, better results overall…
Fix what’s on your plate first.
Then add extras if you want.
